English Word Order in Italian Sentences

Another major mistake I hear from US students is sentence rhythm.

English word order is very rigid: Subject + Verb + Object.

Italian is more flexible.

For example, in English: “I bought a book yesterday.”

In Italian, you might say: Ieri ho comprato un libro.

The time expression often comes first.

Why Word Order Matters

Italian often moves elements for emphasis.

Instead of: ❌ Ho visto Maria ieri al mercato.

You might hear: ✅ Ieri al mercato ho visto Maria.

The focus changes slightly depending on what you want to highlight.

Grammar Hint

Italian allows flexibility because verb endings carry meaning.

This means you can:

  • Emphasize time

  • Emphasize place

  • Emphasize the object

Learning to feel this rhythm takes exposure and guided speaking practice.

I always tell my students: sounding natural is not only about vocabulary — it’s about rhythm.

If you want to train your ear and your sentence structure to sound more Italian, I’d love to help.
