Panettone: The Sweet Symbol of Italian Christmas

When December arrives in Italy, one dessert appears everywhere: Panettone.

Panettone comes from Milan, in Lombardy, and it has become the symbol of Italian Christmas. Tall, soft, and filled with candied fruit and raisins, it’s traditionally enjoyed with family on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

In Italy, giving a panettone as a gift is also very common. It represents sharing and celebration.

🧂 Ingredients (for 1 large panettone)

  • 500 g strong flour

  • 120 g sugar

  • 120 g butter (softened)

  • 3 eggs

  • 150 g raisins

  • 100 g candied orange peel

  • 200 ml warm milk

  • 10 g dry yeast

  • Zest of 1 lemon

  • Pinch of sal

🍰 Preparation

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm milk.

  2. Mix flour, sugar, eggs, and milk.

  3. Add butter gradually.

  4. Incorporate raisins and candied peel.

  5. Let the dough rise for 4–6 hours.

  6. Bake at 180°C for about 45 minutes.

Grammar Hint

Notice how recipes often use the imperative form:

  • Mescola la farina.

  • Lascia lievitare.

Also, holiday expressions use articles:

  • A Natale (no article)

  • Il giorno di Natale (with article)

Italian prepositions with holidays follow specific patterns — useful for cultural conversations.
